Apply Now! Flow Cytometry Training Course scholarships for UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine researchers are now available!  

 

Details: School of Veterinary members are eligible to apply for two (2) full tuition scholarships ($900.00) for the UC Davis Comprehensive Course in Flow Cytometry, offered ONLINE February 8-12, 2021 by the UC Davis Flow Cytometry Shared Resource.

 

Who can apply? Scholarships are available to faculty, post-doctoral researchers, graduate student researchers, undergraduate students and laboratory staff members who are School of Veterinary Medicine affiliates.

 

How to apply? Applicants need to submit a short, 1 paragraph description of their research project and indicate specifically:

·      How this flow cytometry training will advance their research goals.

·      Describe plans to use the Flow Cytometry Core’s instrumentation to carry out their research work (Sacramento or Davis).

·      Agreement to appropriately cite the UC Davis Flow Cytometry Shared Resource when publishing cytometry data generated using core instrumentation and supported by this educational opportunity.  

Key dates: Applications are currently being accepted until January 29, 2021. We will notify you in early February whether you have been selected to receive a scholarship.

The course objectives are:

Who should attend?

Prior course participants have included faculty, post-doctoral researchers, graduate students, staff, motivated high school students (!) and researchers from our industry partners.

What are the prerequisites?

Flow cytometry is now used across a broad spectrum of biological research programs. As such, there are no prerequisites other than familiarity with general biological concepts and a desire to learn about fluorescence, flow cytometry and cell sorting. Some general laboratory experience in working with live cells is helpful, particularly immunofluorescence microscopy and cell staining.

What do I need to bring? The lecture materials will be taught online using teleconferencing software (Zoom,  Slack) and a copy of the lecture materials will be provided in a PDF format. It is necessary to have a laptop or tablet (but not required) to view the lectures, take notes and follow along with the lecture materials. We will be working with FlowJo software in the data analysis demonstrations (during lecture sessions) and in the FlowJo lab. FlowJo version 10 will work on either Mac or PC and you can download a free trial during the course to use if you wish.

Can I provide my own samples? The laboratory sessions will use previously prepared samples geared toward specific teaching goals, so we won’t have time to work with individual samples.

Can I bring my own data? We will provide experimental data sets during the workshop to keep everyone on track and to illustrate important concepts. If you have specific questions, please bring them, or flow plots from your own analysis or a print out for us to look over and offer advice. During the latter part of the week we’ll cover multicolor panel design, you are encouraged to share your proposed multicolor stain panel details with us as we work to build panels in an interactive exercise. 

Where is the course? The course is held online via Zoom and Slack.
