Description
This 11-part workshop series in August 2021 will introduce attendees to the principles and practice of remote computing with UNIX on workstations, HPCs, and cloud. Topics include shell, editing remote files, ssh, remote file transfer, software installation with conda, project organization, automating analyses, cluster compute with slurm, and cloud compute with AWS.
Learning Objectives
After this workshop, learners will have gained hands-on experience in many facets of remote computer usage.
Prerequisites
No prior programming experience is required, but this series will be most useful to researchers who are proficient at a scripting language (R, Python, Matlab, SAS, etc.) and are interested in using the campus HPC facilities or otherwise running processes on remote machines. All learners will need access to an internet-connected computer and the latest version of Zoom.
Expectations
Learners are expected to actively participate and complete all pre- and post- assessment surveys. Learner registration and survey data will be used by the instructional team to evaluate and improve our training activities. Responses will be deidentified and aggregated for reporting purposes. This series is offered by the Lab for Data Intensive Biology through the NIH Common Fund Data Ecosystem (https://training.nih-cfde.org/en/latest/) in collaboration with the UC Davis DataLab (https://datalab.ucdavis.edu) as a pilot for a new remote computing microcredential offered in collaboration with UC Davis' GradPathways Institute.
